Hi, I have great news to share. I recently learned that I passed Altenew Educator Certification Program level 1 final challenge! I am excited to be moving forward to level 2 of the AECP journey! Today, I am sharing two projects for the Impressive Heat Embossing Techniques class.
Do you enjoy using heat embossing techniques for your cards? I do now but it wasn’t always the case. When I first started card making, I got so frustrated with the powders sticking everywhere. After much persistence, I got better. And after going through the lessons Svetlana covered in this class, I came away more excited to use heat embossing for my cards. Let’s look at the two projects.
Card #1 – Sending Birthday Hugs
For the first card, I used heat embossing techniques in layers to add interest to the flowers. Here, I featured the Craft Your Life Project Kit – Elegant Motif 3D Embossing Folder.
To begin, on a heavy weight 3.5” x 8.25” slimline black card stock panel, I misted it with water and ran it through my die cut machine. Next, I used Altenew Woodless Watercolor Pencils to color the flowers and leaves.
To add some shimmer, I used Lindy’s Gang mica powders to watercolor the flowers and buds. Once the panel dried, after applying antistatic powder, I used the VersaMark pen to apply sticky ink on the flowers and buds. For the top flower, I applied clear embossing powder. Once cooled, I re-applied some VersaMark ink and added some pink embossing powder to add interest to the flower center. The middle flower, I used clear embossing powder and the flower middle I heat embossed with gilded gold powder. For the two blue flowers, I used Altenew translucent pearl embossing powder.
I adhered the panel to a black slime line heavy weight black card base. After gluing the gold foil frame with some foam strips for dimension, I finished the card with “Sending Birthday Hugs” which I heat embossed with gilded gold powder. For some extra shine, I scattered some Studio Katia Exotic Onyx Pearls.
Card #2 – Hello
What do you do with all the packaging materials such as tissue papers with gorgeous prints from our craft orders? Make cards out of them of course! For this card, I wanted to make a card using the eclipse technique.
First, using a make-up sponge, I smeared some Mod Podge to the back of the Altenew wrapping tissue paper and adhered it to a 4″ x 5.25″ heavy weight black card panel. Tip: I recommend using heavy weight card stock since Mod Podge is wet medium. Take your time adhering to the card stock to avoid any wrinkles. Set aside to dry. Next, using cutting mat as a guide, I lined up “HELLO” from the Altenew Mighty Alphabet die set. I used the “F” letter as a stand in spacing for the second “L” to ensure the word was properly aligned. With a temporary tape, I was able to pick up all the letters at once and die cut on black heavy weight card stocks four times. Once the recycled tissue paper panel was dried, I die cut “Hello” letters.
I adhered all five layers together. Then, I heat embossed the letters using Altenew translucent pearl crisp embossing powder three times. I absolutely love this embossing powder! It is translucent and has lots of glitters in it. For the eclipse technique, this embossing powder was the perfect medium to enhance the gold prints. Next, I cut a brushed gold matte layer to enhance the focal panel and pull together the overall design. To complete the card, I added Studio Katia Exotic Onyx Pearls for extra shine.
I love how dramatic the cards turned out. The multiple layers of mica and heat embossing added textures and shimmer to the first card. And who knew that a recycled wrapping tissue paper would make a beautiful card! I wish you could see the cards in person. I hope these projects give you some inspirations. Until next time.
